ST. BONIFACIUS, Minn. --- Crown College Softball defeated Martin Luther today in both contests of a non-conference doubleheader. The Storm narrowly defeated the Knights in the first contest 6-5. They didn't need to worry about a close margin in the second game, winning 9-1 when they enacted the eight-run rule in the bottom of the sixth.
In game one, the Knights started the scoring with one run in the first. Crown then countered as Kaylee Wilson scored on a passed ball. The Storm took the lead in the second after Ashley Earick and Liz Kemp scored Morgan Lawrence and Earick on RBI singles. The Storm added three more runs in the third, after a Zoe Roberts bunt forced a costly error for the Knights, allowing Laryssa Vik, Hailey Wilson, and even Roberts herself to get home. Crown didn't need any more runs from there, as the Knights crawled back but fell a single run short for the 6-5 Storm win.
Pitching the first contest was first-year Savannah Ellis, who allowed three earned runs and struck out two in her complete-game pitching performance. The win today was Ellis's first collegiate victory.
In the second contest, the Storm struck first when Hailey Wilson scored on a passed ball after reaching on a double. MLC knotted the game up in the second, but the Storm took control of the contest in the third. Roberts scored Kaylee Wilson on a double to take the lead, followed by Raquel Gonzalez hitting in Kuulei Ili. In the fourth, the Storm added three more runs as Ili singled to score Kemp, Kaylee Wilson scored on a wild pitch, and Roberts doubled to score Ili.
As the Storm closed in on an eight-run rule win, Martin Luther's pitcher and catcher were not on the same page, as the Knights had six passed balls in the inning. Kuulei Ili, Katelyn Walls, and Zoe Roberts all scored because of the numerous errors and ended the contest with two outs in the sixth.
Starting game two was Lindsay Glover, who took home the win as she went 3.1 innings. Glover pitched well, allowing only one run in 18 batters faced. Relieving Glover was Maddie Noble, who threw the remaining 2.2 innings, allowing no earned runs, only one hit, and striking out two. Noble nearly took the win for the contest, as if the game would have completed the last out of the sixth inning, the rules would dictate she take the win.
The Storm will next play on Wednesday as they take on the Bethany Lutheran Vikings for their third and fourth conference games of the season.
