Panthers Defeat Crown Despite Mistretta’s Big Day

Greenville, Ill. – The Crown College Storm got another huge day from receiver Cole Mistretta, who grabbed three more touchdowns among his 13 receptions, but couldn't keep pace with the potent Greenville Panthers, eventually falling by a final score of 55-30.

Mistretta led all receivers with 13 catches for 137 yards, but was outshone by Greenville running back Paul Garrett who rushed 239 yards and four touchdowns on only 16 carries, averaging a ridiculous 14.9 yards per carry.

It was a tale of two styles as Crown outpaced the Panthers 307-159 in passing yards while the home team rushed for 424 yards while the Storm had a net of -42 yards on the ground.

Crown took an early lead when Quis Icon recovered a fumble on the opening series setting up a short Crown touchdown drive that featured a big fourth down completion to Mistretta from Jared Gilmore and then a two yard TD strike between the pair.

Having run just two plays the previous drive, Greenville needed just one play to find paydirt as Garrett took the handoff 63 yards for a  touchdown and the Panthers were off to the races.

The home team scored two more touchdowns to build a 21-6 lead before a seven yard TD run by Gilmore and a successful two point conversion pass to Mistretta brought the score to 21-14.

Unfortunately, Greenville struck back quickly with another one play drive as Garrett scampered 60 yards for his second long touchdown run of the day to open the lead back to 14 points.

The Storm responded with a six-play, 57 yard touchdown drive less than two and a half minutes later, again culminating in a Gilmore to Mistretta touchdown, but Greenville was able to score again before the half as it appeared a shootout was on the cards with the halftime score at 35-22.

Coming out of the break, Greenville scored 21 unanswered points to effectively put the game to bed, but Crown was able to get another score in the fourth, this time on a 16 yard touchdown pass as the Gilmore-Mistretta connection proved to be too much for Greenville.

Gilmore finished 28-62 for 307 yards with three touchdowns and one interception and added the seven yard rushing touchdown to a solid day.

Terry Warner had four catches for 89 yards and Ryan Swecker caught six balls for 47 yards on the afternoon.

Defensively, Ezekiel Williams led the Storm with eleven tackles, including two tackles for loss.  Icon had eight stops, a sack, and his conference leading fourth fumble recovery in the game while Jesse Synoground had a forced fumble and fumble recovery in the game.

The Storm next play at Northwestern under the lights for a 7 p.m. kickoff next Saturday.
