St. Bonifacius, Minn. – The Crown women's soccer team has overcome adversity all season and that mindset served them well on Friday as they came back from a 1-0 deficit to earn a 2-1 win at home over Northland College.
After a scoreless first half, the visiting Lumber Jills won a penalty in the 58
th minute and converted to take a 1-0 lead. The two teams played to a 0-0 draw earlier in October, so this goal broke a streak of over 165 minutes goalless minutes between the sides.
Crown stuck back a little over six minutes later when
Dabilo Maphosa touched the ball around the Northland right back and did well to shield the defender as she drove into the box, eventually winning penalty kick for the hosts.
Emma Domka stepped up and calmly placed her shot to the left of the keeper to draw the Storm level at 1-1.
With parity restored, Crown stayed on the attack and
Abigail Shull played a great ball in behind the Northland defense that
Sidney Manske got on the end of near the corner flag on the right wing. The senior went by her defender and evaded another. Hugging the end line, she smashed a ball across the face of goal with the outside of her right boot and found a sliver of space between the keeper and the post with the ball spinning its way over the line for Crown's second and Manske's first of the season.
Crown managed the remaining 22 minutes extremely well, allowing only a single shot from Northland while having a handful of chances to extend the lead. In the end, the Storm saw out the game and claimed the 2-1 victory.
Crown finishes their season tomorrow (Saturday), by honoring lone senior Manske against UMAC regular season champion UW-Superior. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m.
