St. Bonifacius, Minn. – The Crown men's soccer team proved to be a stern test for the visiting Northland College Lumberjacks on Friday evening, eventually falling by a score of 2-1. The Storm got a late goal from
Tim Jaeger, but couldn't find an equalizer in the final minutes of the match.
The Jacks, who will finish the regular season in third place, got on the board in the 17
th minute and enjoyed a lion's share of the possession throughout. The Storm showed solid character, however, carving out five shots to the visitor's ten in the first half, and finishing with nine shots and four on target.
The second half would see Northland add to their lead after an unfortunate deflection from a corner kick led to an own goal.
Crown was able to keep Northland within striking distance and that paid off when some high pressing from
Josh Cannon led to a Northland turnover and Jaeger pounced, working his way clear of the Northland defense and finishing well, lifting his shot over the onrushing Lumberjack keeper.
The goal was the eighth for the first-year player, who leads the Storm in goals on the season.
With just two and a half minutes remaining, Crown was able to craft one final chance, but
Eli Salisbury saw his shot saved and the playoff-bound Lumberjacks escaped with the one goal victory.
Crown will honor their seniors tomorrow in their final regular season match before heading to NCCAA regionals next Thursday. Kickoff against UW-Superior is set for 3:30 p.m.
