Minneapolis, Minn. – A North Central goal with just a single second remaining in regulation sent Friday's match into overtime where a controversial penalty decision gave the Rams a late 3-2 victory.
Ashley Pierce opened the scoring for the Storm with her sixth of the season in the 15
th minute as Crown looked to make it three victories over the Rams on the season.
North Central would hit back, however, scoring five minutes before halftime to restore parity at 1-1.
Pierce converted from the spot after an excellent delivery from a corner by
Abigail Shull forced an NCU hand ball in the box and it appeared that Crown would be able to hold on for the victory.
The Storm nearly killed the game off with numerous chances to go 3-1 up in the final five minutes, but couldn't find the clinching goal and the Rams evened things up after a scramble in the box with only a second remaining in regulation.
In the overtime period, Crown goalkeeper
Molly Schmitz came off her line to punch the ball clear and appeared to win the ball cleanly before being clattered into by a Rams attacker. The referee saw things differently, however, and awarded the hosts a penalty kick which they converted for the golden-goal, 3-2 victory.
The Storm will look to bounce back tomorrow as they travel to Northwestern for a 1 p.m. kickoff.
