Caruthers Rushes for 150 Yards for Third Straight Game

ROSEVILLE, Minn. --- Sophomore running back Avory Caruthers had his third straight game with over 150 rushing yards, and fourth straight with a touchdown for Crown Football on Saturday night as the team took to "Football Frenzy" under the lights against the rival Northwestern Eagles. However, the Storm fell 23-6 in a game that remained close until the fourth quarter.

The Storm struck first when Caruthers had an electrifying 80-yard touchdown run on the first play of Crown's second drive, following a missed field goal attempt by the Eagles and swinging the momentum in favor of the Storm. Northwestern countered with a score in the early second quarter as the Eagles stole the lead from Crown 7-6. Both teams struggled to capitalize from there, as 7-6 remained the score heading into the break. In the second half, the Eagles wore on the Storm defense, scoring three times extending the lead to 23-6, a score that ended as the final.

Leading the Storm offense was sophomore quarterback Jared Gilmore, who threw for 179 yards in twelve completions. The California native threw two interceptions in the contest. The sophomore back Caruthers added 152 yards on the ground and is up to 543 yards through four games this season. First-year receiver Janaire Smith caught three passes for 69 yards to lead the Storm (his career-high receiving yards), with fellow first-year Cole Mistretta adding 56 yards on five grabs.

The defense was led by junior Corey Huard, who was a single tackle away from Crown's single-game record with an incredible 17 tackles, eleven solo. Senior Cody Ricketts had an interception in the contest, which he returned for 37 yards, his second pick of the season. Fellow Sebastian Alvarado had two tackles for loss to lead the Storm. Ricketts and senior Joe Duffy added eight tackles each.

The Storm's next game is at Old National Bank Stadium, Saturday at 1 pm for Crown Homecoming 2019 as Crown takes on the Iowa Wesleyan Tigers.
