Storm Surge Continues, Win Record Ninth Straight

MORRIS, Minn. --- The Storm won their record ninth straight game, the most consecutive wins in Crown's NCAA-era history. This bested Crown Baseball's old record of five games in a row, a feat accomplished twice in 2017. Crown defeated UM-Morris twice in two days after the first contest was delayed and finished late on Monday night, and the second game was paused in the third inning and continued on Tuesday afternoon. Both games were thrilling and came down to the wire, with the Storm winning 9-8 in game one, and 15-13 in game two.

In game one, Crown started with four straight hits and four runs scored because of it. Gideon Dunn had a double that scored two, and Bailey Sarto had an RBI single. In the second inning, Crown added four more runs to take a commanding lead. Sarto and Dunn added another RBI each, and Chad Herrera and Alex Sugi scored their first RBIs of the game to expand the Storm lead. Then, the Cougars and pulled within a run by the seventh, but the Storm countered with a run for an extra run of insurance when Brooks Repking scored on a wild pitch. That extra run came in handy as they ended up winning the game 9-8.

Junior pitcher Eric Newman picked up his third win of the season, and third straight after going five innings and four earned runs; he struck out five in the contest. First-year pitcher Nick Brock added two innings of relief after Newman, and fellow first-year Rico Aliva picked up a save going two innings and allow a single earned run.

In game two, the Storm got off to a good lead on Monday, leading 12-8 after three innings. The Storm started off in a big way, with a Dunn home run to left field, scoring Chad Herrera. Herrera was a perfect 3/3 in his at-bats today, his second game of the past three getting a hit in every at-bat. In the second inning, Herrera had an RBI, Sarto had an RBI, Derek Albers had two, and Wiens had two in a huge inning to break open a lead for the Storm. In the top of the third, the Cougars cut the game back to a one-run Storm lead, and the Storm finished the inning with three more runs, including a Dunn sacrifice fly. From there the game was paused due to darkness, to be continued on the following day.

When play continued on Tuesday, the Storm held their lead for the remaining innings to take the game 15-13. Seth Betts had the big hit on day two, with a two-RBI triple, his fourth triple of the year. Nicholas Schroedle started the game for the Storm, with Ethan Hyatt relieving him and picking up the win, his first win of the season. From there, Kress Medina went two shutout innings and Seth Betts picked up the save with the final out, his second save of the year.

Crown improves to a UMAC leading 4-0 in conference play, and looks to continue their hot streak on Saturday against Northland. Get up to date information about weather updates and schedule changes on Twitter by following @stormathletics
