ST. BONIFACIUS, Minn. --- Crown Softball split with the Northland Lumberjills on Saturday in their second straight day of UMAC contests, only 22 hours after splitting with the UM-Morris Cougars on Friday.
In the first contest, the Storm fell 8-7 to the Lumberjills. The Storm started with a 3-2 lead after the first. The scoring started when
Telma Roesler reached home when
Liz Kemp grounded into a double play. Next,
Lottie Ellis scored
Zoe Roberts with an RBI single, and
Olivia Christopherson scored Ellis with another RBI single. Kemp added two more RBIs in the second inning with a single that scored Roesler and
Tori Diaz. Next, Ellis hit in Roberts to retake the lead 6-5 by the end of the second inning.
From there, the scoring slowed with neither team scoring until the fifth inning. The Storm scored one more run in the sixth as Kemp hit another RBI single that scored Roesler, Kemp's fourth RBI of the day. Unfortunately, it was not enough to come back as Crown fell 8-7. First-year
Maddie Noble pitched the first game and went seven innings, striking out two and allowing five earned runs.
In the second game, Crown scored early and often to eight-run rule Northland in five innings, 13-5. Despite allowing three runs in the top of the first, the Storm lit up the bats coming back with six runs in the bottom half of the inning. The scoring started when
Demi Brezina advanced from second to home as the Lumberjills' centerfielder glove barely missed a drive from Kemp.
Olivia Dols scored with an RBI single from Kemp, and Ellis scored on a wild pitch to add two more runs. Next,
Janette Maendl was hit by a pitch that scored another run.
Then, Roesler scored hit a deep single that scored Diaz and
Samantha Collins as the Storm batted around. Northland added a couple of runs to make it a 6-5 in the top of the second, but the Storm added another huge inning to expand their lead.
Ellie Clark was hit by a pitch to score Ellis to start the inning's scoring. Diaz was hit by a pitch next and scored Dols. After that, Maendl had an RBI scoring Collins to increase the Storm lead to four. In the third inning, Dols reached and scored outfielder
Maddie Noble. In the fourth, Roesler doubled to score
Laryssa Vik, and Roesler found home plate on a wild pitch. Then Kemp hit a single that scored Noble to reach the eight-run limit in the fourth. Kemp pitched the game for the Storm, and went five innings with three earned runs; she struck out three along the way. It was Kemp's second win of the season, now 2-2 on the year.
The Storm next play on Tuesday, when they head to Mankato for a matchup with the Bethany Lutheran Vikings; first pitch is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
