ST. BONIFACIUS, Minn. --- Crown Softball played a doubleheader on Saturday with the UM-Morris Cougars, and split the series after an incredible clutch extra-innings win in game two.
In game one, the Storm struggled as the Cougars came out strong. After the Cougars took an early seven run lead, the Storm came back with a couple runs of their own as
Liz Kemp and
Lottie Ellis both had RBI singles in the third inning. The Storm eventually fell in six innings, 10-2.Sophomore pitcher
Olivia Christopherson was on the mound for the Storm, pitching a complete game.
In game two, the Storm scored first as
Demi Brezina scored
Telma Roesler with an RBI single in the first inning. After the Cougars responded with three runs of their own, the Storm took the rest of the regulation game to tie it up. In the fourth inning,
Ally Adams hit a triple to score
Lottie Ellis to put the Storm within striking distance. However, it looked like they were going to come just a bit short as the Storm still trailed by a run with two outs in the bottom of the seventh, no one on. Then,
Laryssa Vik walked to get on first.
Samantha Collins walked to get Vik to second. Then, when the Storm needed her most,
Lottie Ellis hit a single to center, scoring Vik and completing the unlikely comeback. In the eighth, after getting three outs and allowing no runs for the sixth straight inning, the Storm started their run that would win them the game. It started with Roesler walking, followed by
Zoe Roberts walking, and continued by a bloop single by
Demi Brezina. Then with the bases loaded, first baseman
Liz Kemp was hit by a pitch for the game-winning run, Roesler, to score.
"We came out in the second game, knew we had to win, that we had to pull it out somehow," said Roesler after scoring the game-winning run. "The last inning showed that we can pull it together as a team; it doesn't matter if it's the top half of the lineup or the bottom."
Pitcher
Maddie Noble had her first collegiate home win, going eight innings and only allowing a single earned run. This was her third win of the season overall.
The Storm have a quick turnaround, with a matchup with the Northland Lumberjills tomorrow afternoon, with first pitch scheduled for 1 p.m.
