SUPERIOR, Wis. --- Crown Softball faced the UW-Superior Yellowjackets as they start their conference season on Sunday in the UMAC Game of the Week. The contest was originally scheduled for Saturday, but inclement weather delayed the game until Sunday. The Storm fell to the Yellowjackets 5-9 and 6-11 in the doubleheader.
In game one, the Storm fell behind 0-2 in the first inning, and the game remained at that score until the fourth inning, where the Storm came back with a run of their own as
Liz Kemp singled with
Samantha Collins doubling to put her in position to score, and then
Olivia Dols putting the ball in play to get Kemp home. In the sixth,
Demi Brezina scored on a Collins single to add another run and
Lottie Ellis singled to score Collins, cutting the UWS lead back to a single run. Unfortunately, a big sixth inning for the Yellowjackets gave Superior a six-run lead. Brezina singled to score
Telma Roesler in the seventh, and Kemp put the ball in play to score Brezina to add a couple runs late, as Crown fell 5-9.
Sophomore pitcher
Olivia Christopherson started the contest, going five innings with four earned runs, and struck out two along the way. First-year pitcher
Maddie Noble pitched the final inning and allowed one run, retiring three of four batters in a total of twelve pitches.
In game two, the Yellowjackets scored with ease, with eleven runs in the contest. The Storm scored on RBIs from Roesler (2), Ellis,
Janette Maendl, and Dols. Roseler led the team with two extra-base hits, a triple and a double in the contest. Noble pitched the game for the Storm, throwing a complete game in 98 pitches. Crown returns home for contests on Wednesday, with the UM-Morris Cougars scheduled to head to St. Bonifacius.
