ST. PAUL, Minn. --- Crown Softball played a doubleheader at Macalester on Wednesday as they started their post-spring break season back in the midwest. The Storm took the first game in extra innings 8-7 but fell to the Scots in the second 4-3.
In game one, the Storm started with an early lead as right fielder
Demi Brezina hit a single to score shortstop
Telma Roesler in the first inning. In the next inning, left fielder
Ellie Clark singled to third base to score pitcher
Olivia Christopherson, adding another run to their lead. In the fourth inning,
Laryssa Vik found a way to get to home plate as Roesler grounded out for an RBI. After the Scots tied it up at three apiece, the Storm retook the lead in the fifth inning as Christopherson doubled to score Brezina. Starting a pattern of trading runs, Macalester tied up the game once again in the bottom half of the inning. In the sixth, third-baseman
Zoe Roberts had an RBI single to score Clark, but the Scots once again knotted up the score in the bottom half of the inning.
With the game tied going into extra innings,
Laryssa Vik was placed on second and
Samantha Collins quickly singled to score the sophomore catcher. Then Roesler hit a double to score Collins, and Roberts hit a single to score Clark to take a three-run lead. After allowing two runs in the bottom half of the inning,
Olivia Dols stopped a grounder to keep runners on second and third from scoring and tying/taking the game. Crown defeated the Scots by one, 8-7. Sophomore Christopherson was on the mound and won her third game of the season, striking out five along the way.
In game two, the Storm were defeated by a single run in a lower scoring matchup. First-year first baseman
Liz Kemp had two RBIs in the third inning, scoring the sophomore
Lottie Ellis along with Roesler, tying the game up at two. The Storm fell down another two runs by the seventh inning, but Ellis' RBI single took one back as she scored Vik. Unfortunately, the Storm's scoring stopped there and the Scots took the game by a run. First-year pitcher
Maddie Noble was on the mound in game two for the Storm, with a quality start in the contest as she pitched six innings with three earned runs.
This weekend, the Storm next head to northern Wisconsin to face the UW-Superior Yellowjackets to start conference play.
