St. Bonifacius, Minn. — Crown's softball team was at home as they looked to continue their success deep into the UMAC season after winning their first eight conference contests. However, poor fielding and solid play from UW-Superior spoiled Crown's unblemished record 7-8 in game one. Crown took revenge in game two, where pitcher
Olivia Christopherson pitched a one-run complete game, and a two-run home run by
Lis King gave Crown the split.
In the first matchup against the Yellowjackets, Crown gave up three runs in the first inning as UWS came out swinging against Crown pitcher
Lis King. Crown matched that with three runs of their own in the third inning when a two-RBI double by King was followed by an RBI double by
Olivia Dols, scoring King. Superior added a run in the fourth, but the trouble came in the fifth inning when costly errors extended an inning (resulting in four UWS runs). Crown, down five, kept the fight alive throughout the rest of the game. In the fifth inning, an RBI single by
Lottie Ellis added a run. In the sixth, a
Marissa Carter double added another. In the bottom of the seventh, down three, Crown started the inning with a King double, but quickly had the next two batters get out. With two outs, a triple by
Lottie Ellis scored King, and
Kailee Leathers scored Ellis on a double. Unfortunately, the next Crown batter was out, just a run shy of a remarkable comeback.
In the second game, Crown started out with a bang after
Cassidy Valenzuela had a triple in the first inning followed by a two-run
Lis King home run. From there, the Crown scoring stopped, but that was enough due to an impressive performance by
Olivia Christopherson, who allowed only one run in a complete game win. This victory wasn't an easy effort, with a double play including a play at the plate preserving the lead.
Crown moves to 9-1 in UMAC play, while UWS has now lost three of their last four games after being swept by St. Scholastica Wednesday. Crown hosts Martin Luther on Friday as they attempt to keep on top of the UMAC and host the UMAC Playoffs next week.
