Duluth, Minn. — Sophomore Tim Wendel scored an impressive 33 points on Saturday against the St. Scholastica Saints, but the team wasn't able to capitalize on Wendel's performance, falling to the Saints 83-102. This match is the second straight UMAC game that the Storm has allowed over 100 points, and now have lost their past three games.
Last year in Duluth, Crown was able to win in St. Scholastica for the first time in school history, but they weren't able to replicate the success of that road trip this year. Wendel scored his 33 points on 10/17 shooting from the field and knocking down two three-pointers and eleven free throws. 33 points is the most from Wendel in a non-overtime game this season, only scoring more (34 points) against Luther in an overtime thriller. Senior post Austin VanDerHeyden was second on the Storm in scoring with 15 points; he also added a team-high eight rebounds in the game. Junior Josh Volness made three three-pointers in the game out of five attempts, and Logan Strand added eleven points and seven rebounds off the bench.
While the Storm shot 40% from the field in the game, the Saints were able to shoot 45% from beyond the arc, making 14 three-pointers out of 31 attempts and only missed one of their 21 free-throw attempts to score over 100 points for the first time this season. Crown will drop to 2-5 in conference play as they now sit out of a UMAC playoff spot.
Next up for the Storm is a home game against the last-place Martin Luther Knights at 5:30 p.m. at home in St. Bonifacius. The Knights currently sit in last place in UMAC play.
