St. Bonifacius, Minn. — Crown softball improved the 6-0 in UMAC play after sweeping the University of Minnesota-Morris. The first was a relatively simply win compared to game two, which involved a three-run inning in the bottom of the seventh to send the game to extras and an eventual tenth inning win.
In game one, Crown scored four runs in the second inning to sprint out to a 4-0 lead, and never looked back winning the game 7-4. Third baseman
Janelle Williams had two RBIs with two doubles, two runs and a steal in the match to lead Crown's offense. First baseman
Moriah Sawyer also had two hits and a RBI, along with scoring twice. Outfielder
Cassidy Valenzuela hit the only other extra base hit, a double for two RBIs of her own (scoring Williams and Sawyer).
On the mound for game one was
Lis King, who only allowed one earned run in seven innings of work. King also got on base every time, with three walks and a single.
In game two, Morris jumped out to a 5-0 lead by the end of the top of the third inning; however, Crown came back a run in the third inning of a Williams' triple and added a couple more runs in the fourth. Down 3-6 in the bottom of the seventh, the Crown bats came alive with a huge base clearing double by
Cassidy Valenzuela for three RBIs to tie up the game and send it into extra innings. Both teams couldn't find a run until the tenth inning, when a single by second baseman
Olivia Dols scored
Marissa Becerra to win the game.
Crown split their pitching in game two, with
Kaylea Kidder pitching the first five innings, allowing four earned runs, before King came back to pitch the final two innings (along with the three extra innings). In King's five total innings of work in game two, she allowed only two hits and had two strikeouts to get her second win of the day.
Crown's next game is at Wisconsin-Superior on Thursday as they attempt to stay undefeated in the UMAC.
