Minneapolis, Minn. — The Crown softball team faced UMAC opponent North Central on Saturday, and played great softball both on offense and defense to get the sweep against the Rams, winning the first game 19-3 and the second 5-1.
In game one, the Storm scored five runs in the second inning to reach an early 6-2 lead and topped that later in the game scoring eight runs in the fourth. Crown's first baseman
Moriah Sawyer, third baseman
Janelle Williams, and pitcher Lis King led the way for Crown, all having multiple extra-base hits in the game. Sawyer led the team with five RBIs and had three hits including a double and a triple, along with scoring four runs. Williams had two doubles in the game, along with two doubles, two runs, two steals, and three RBIs.
King had her sixth home run of the season, tying the NCAA-era Crown record for most in a season. King also had a double and four RBIs in the game. All of her offensive production goes along with her solid pitching performance, getting her second straight win in four innings of work, striking out six.
It was a team performance, with shortstop
Marissa Becerra, second baseman
Olivia Dols, and catcher
Samantha Collins all having two hits, each with at least one extra-base hit in the game. Outfielder
Cassidy Valenzuela had two steals in the game.
In the second match, Crown relied on its pitching to win the game, with a
Kaylea Kidder only allowing three hits in her complete game with no earned runs. Kidder struck out seven in the game, and though the Storm didn't give her 19 runs of support, the five runs they did give was more than enough to get Crown the sweep of North Central.
Lis King led the offense for the Storm, going 3/3 with a walk, a double and an RBI.
Janelle Williams had another game with three hits or more, and added another two steals (four steals in both games).
Marissa Becerra had another two hits in the game, as she combined for four hits in the doubleheader.
Crown next plays at home on Wednesday.
