Ashland, Wis. - Crown College entered Saturday on a four game slide looking to get back on track after some close losses to both Morris and Superior. In those four games, Crown lost some close games that were decided by only a few runs. The double header against Northland would be no different as Crown would split the two games losing game one by a score of 9-7 and winning game two 4-3.
Game 1
Crown built a 4-0 lead in the first two innings behind RBIs from
David Cruz,
David Sherwood, and
Dalton Wintersole before Northland answered with two runs in the bottom of the second to make the score 4-2. Wintersole hit his second sacrifice fly in the top of the fourth inning to make the score 5-2, but Northland answered again in the bottom of the fifth on an error to make the score 5-3. Sherwood hit another RBI single in the top of the seventh to bring the lead to 6-3, but the bottom of the eighth inning would doom Crown. Northland scored six runs in the inning as Crown did not help themselves with some mistakes coming in the form of walks and errors. Crown rallied in the ninth with bases loaded and no outs, but only scored one run to narrow the score to 9-7.
Daryl Taylor went 3-3 from the plate as Sherwood, Wintersole, and Cruz all had two hit games.
Game 2
Crown struck right away in the first inning behind a Cruz single to open up the scoring, but the Lumberjacks scored one run to tie in the bottom of the first. Cruz delivered again with an RBI double in the top of the fourth for a 2-1 lead, and the score would remain the same until the seventh inning when Taylor would hit an RBI triple and Wintersole would bring Taylor in with a sacrifice fly for a 4-1 lead. Northland threatened in the eighth again scoring two runs, unearned from an error, but Crown held on for a 4-3 win. Cruz and Tate led offensively with two hit games, and
Ryan Denison picked up the win from the mound with
Seth Herdle getting the save.
