Northfield, Minn. – The Crown volleyball team opened their regular season schedule with a pair of games at the St. Olaf Invite. The Storm battled the hosts and took on UW-Stout, dropping both matches by a 3-0 margin.
The opener featured Crown playing away at host St. Olaf. Despite the sweep, Crown improved in each game, losing 25-9, 25-13, 25-18.
Kirby Beers led the attack with four kills while
Taylor Urcuyo played well as the libero, recording 19 digs.
In the end, the Storm were overwhelmed by a bigger, more experience opponent, hitting at a -.036 percentage while allowing St. Olaf to hit .247.
Game two saw Crown take on UW-Stout, another tough opponent, and falling 25-10, 25-16, 25-16.
Game one got off to a rough start, with the Storm hitting -.238 % with three kills and eight attacking errors. Things turned around from an attacking standpoint after that, with Crown rebounding to hit .037 for the match, including a very efficient .214 in game two.
Stout proved too much however, amassing 43 kills and seven aces while swinging to a .348 hitting percentage.
Haily Unferdorfer led Crown with five kills, with Urcuyo and
Miranda Brueggeman each totaling eight digs.
Crown will travel to Milwaukee, Wis. on Friday to do battle with Mt. Mary for their next match.
