St. Paul, Minn. -
Ger Jones converted a very well taken penalty in overtime to give the Crown men's soccer team a dramatic 2-1, come from behind victory at the University of Northwestern. The OT win helps ease the sting of the 3-2 overtime loss suffered at the hands of the Eagles earlier this year.
A great ball into the box by the Eagles led to an unfortunate but unavoidable own goal in the first half, giving the home team a lead they would hold until late in the second half.
The 1-0 score held all the way up to the 83rd minute when
Josiah Steinkamp did well to win a header off a corner and the ball settled at the feet of freshman
Josh Samsa who poked home the equalizer from six yards out.
For the second straight meeting, the two teams would go to sudden death overtime. Just over six minutes in, Crown's
Hunter Smith was clipped on his way toward goal and after a brief hesitation the referee pointed to the spot.
That's when Jones stepped up and confidently found the bottom left corner, giving Crown the win with the golden goal penalty.
Crown will finish off the season with a trio of home non-conference games.
