St. Bonifacius, Minn. – Playing with 10 men for well over an hour, the Crown men's soccer team nearly shocked Minnesota Morris, settling for a 1-1 draw and a well-earned point.
Ger Jones opened the scoring for Crown in the 17
th minute, keeping a defender on his back after a throw in deep in Cougar territory and executing a perfect turn and shot, beating the Morris keeper just inside the far post
.
The dynamic of the match changed drastically when
Sam Eckman was shown a red card in the 33
rd minute, forcing the Storm to play a man down for the remainder of the match.
Crown's back line played extremely well once again, and
Tanner Fisher was in fine form as well, making an incredible save in the second half to keep the visitors at bay.
Morris would continue to push forward, eventually netting the equalizer after a scrum in the box with less than 12 minutes to go in regulation.
The two teams would need overtime to settle things, and Morris continued to look dangerous in the first overtime, forcing Crown to do some hurried defending and survives some close calls.
Something changed heading into the second overtime as Crown went on the attack, getting a number of quality chances in the final 10 minutes. Their best chance to score came when Morris misplayed a clearance and the ball fell to
Truman Shetler inside the 18. The Crown forward blasted a shot towards the near post that was steered wide by a sprawling save from the Cougar's Cody Christ.
That would be the final threat from either team as the game would end 1-1.
The point puts Crown in fine position after one weekend as the Storm sit alone in second place with four points. The team will continue their journey through the UMAC as they travel to Northland and St. Scholastica next weekend.
