Rosemount, Minn. – The Crown softball team swept Finlandia in a non-conference double-header on Saturday, giving first year head coach
Ashlyn Englehorn her first wins as a collegiate head coach. The Storm won a thrilling 10-9 game in the opener and dominated 8-0 in five innings to take game two.
Liz Kemp was a terror at the plate for the Storm, combining to go 7-7 with a sacrifice fly over both games. The centerfielder scored four times and had five RBI on the day, leading a Crown offense that exploded for 18 runs.
Kemp wasn't the only Storm player to excel at the plate as eight players collected hits in each game.
Alongside Kemp's four hits in game one,
Thiery Zachary,
Ally Adams,
Kiara Hurt, and
Maria Lilienthal each had a pair of hits. Lilienthal led the way with three RBI and reached base in all four of her plate appearances with a pair of walks to go with two doubles. Three of Kemp's four hits were doubles in game one. Both her marks of four hits and three doubles tie the Crown single game record.
Despite the offensive explosion, game one was a real barn-burner with ten of the 13 half-innings featuring runs. Finlandia jumped out to an early lead in the top of the first only to see Crown tie things up in the bottom half.
The Lions scored the next three runs before Crown scored twice in the bottom of the third and then exploded for five runs in the bottom of the fifth. Finlandia would score twice more in each of the next two frames to tie things up at eight apiece before Hurt and Adams delivered RBI singles in the bottom of the sixth to give Crown the lead for good.
Abbey Underdahl went the distance for the Storm, scattering four hits through seven innings, but struggled with control, allowing 12 walks. The first-year from Columbia Falls, Montana battled back with a trio of strikeouts and earned her first collegiate win in the process.
Game two had none of the drama of game one, as Lindsey Glover earned the win by allowing just four baserunners over five innings, striking out two for her first win of the season.
Kemp continued to deliver at the plate, collecting three more doubles for six on the afternoon and again tying the mark for doubles in a game. The Crown senior led the team with three RBI.
Underdahl had a great game two at the plate, collecting three singles and stealing four bases on her way to three runs scored. The four bags are just one shy of the single game record set by Erin Ebbers in 2013.
Crown had 13 hits, five doubles, and seven stolen bases in the five-inning win.
The Storm will look to capitalize on this momentum when they travel to Minnesota Morris for their UMAC opener on Saturday, April 2
