DULUTH, Minn. ---- Crown's softball team fell in an elimination game in their third game of the UMAC tournament 3-7 to Bethany Lutheran, who they bested at the beginning of the tournament 3-2.
Crown has scored three runs against the Vikings ace all three times this season. This time, they scored all three runs in the first inning after
Lottie Ellis doubled down the left-field line to score
Lis King and
Laryssa Vik doubled to center field, scoring both
Olivia Dols and Ellis. Unfortunately, from that point on Bethany held Crown scoreless, and Crown stranded nine base runners in the game. Crown held the lead up until Bethany tied the game in the fourth inning. The Vikings pulled ahead in the fifth for a 4-3 lead, and even further in the seventh taking a 7-3 lead.
Crown ends the season 1-2 in postseason play and won ten conference games in a very successful season. This loss is the second straight postseason Crown was eliminated by a team they had earlier beaten in the tournament, falling to the University of Northwestern in their second matchup last year.
Bethany moves on to face the College of St. Scholastica; the Saints are coming off the wrong side of a blowout with Northwestern earlier in the day. Crown looks to stay competitive next year, with 2017 UMAC Player of the Year
Lis King set to return for her senior year along with all but three of their regular starting nine and all three pitchers having remaining eligibility.
