Duluth, Minn. – The Crown softball team headed to St. Scholastica this weekend having already clinched a playoff spot, but searching for a higher seed. After acquitting themselves well against the Saints, the Storm dropped both games to the eventual conference champion, falling 3-0 and 10-5. The Storm will finish as the four seed and host Minnesota Morris in a first round game on Tuesday.
Game one was a classic pitcher's duel, with the two teams combining for only 12 for the game, with Crown recording seven.
Liz King threw six strong innings, but St. Scholastica was able to make each hit count, with all five of the Saints hits going for extra bases. The Saints hit four doubles and a home run to score their three runs, while Crown stranded nine in the game, failing to score for the first time in over a month.
Sofia Palacios and
Moriah Sawyer each had two hits to lead the Storm offense.
Game two featured more offense, with the teams combining for 22 hits and 15 runs. The Saints once again got some big hits, including a pair of doubles and a pair of home runs.
Crown jumped out to an early lead, but couldn't keep the Saints offense at bay, eventually falling 10-5.
King took the loss after
Cearra Dulaney pitched the first three innings. King hit her second home run of the season and
Janelle Williams collected three more hits, including her 10
th double of the season, but the Storm just didn't have enough to keep pace.
Crown's regular season record finishes at 15-21, with an 11-5 mark in UMAC play. Should the Storm beat Morris in the first round game on Tuesday, the team will travel back to Duluth to take on St. Scholastica in the first round of the tournament portion of the softball postseason.
