St. Bonifacius, Minn. – Saturday could not have been any different from Friday for the Crown men's soccer team. The start of the weekend was not kind to the Storm as they were blitzed by the juggernaut that is St. Scholastica, falling behind 3-0 before 10 minutes was gone and eventually falling by a 7-0 final score. The boys rebounded on Saturday, however, shutting out Northland for a 5-0 victory. The Storm remain in third place in the UMAC after the weekend, and are still in striking distance of Minnesota Morris for an opportunity to host a first round playoff game.
Friday's matchup with the table-topping Saints got ugly fast. The visitors scored three times, the third on a tough penalty decision against the Storm, and didn't look back. St. Scholastica added another goal before halftime and scored three more second half goals to complete the dominating win. Crown was only able to manage a pair of shots on goal, and neither were particularly dangerous.
Saturday's matchup featured Crown recognizing their seniors in their final regular season home appearances.
David Jensen got Crown on the board with a spectacular header from
Derick Boese's corner kick 13 minutes in.
Reagan Mahoney then scored his first collegiate goal with a strike from inside the penalty area and Boese netted the first goal of his career just over a minute later.
Truman Shetler recorded his 16
th goal of the season, one shy of the season scoring record, in the second half to make the score 4-0.
The moment of the match, however, belonged to senior
Daniel Arellano. Playing in front of his family on senior day, Crown's left back scored what might be the goal of the season. Off a corner, Arellano fired a dipping shot from a volley, 25 yards from goal that bent in at an impossible angle for the Northland keeper to deal with.
That goal concluded the scoring as Crown's
Tanner Fisher completed his fourth shutout of the season. That number is good for the season record for shutouts and also eclipses the career mark for the NCAA era (2008-present).
Crown will have a huge matchup with Minnesota Morris on the road this Friday in a battle of two teams looking to host in the first round of the conference tournament.
